How often should a church board meet?
I recommend that church Board's meet on a regular monthly basis. The time should include time for communication, training, vision sharing, dicussion, and following the business of a pre-planned agenda. If Board's do not meet regularly they will never develop the synergy to be properly decisive as a team.I also recommend that Board's be empowered. By that I mean they should have decision-making authority for the business matters of the church without congregational approval. This requires a change in the by-laws in order to do so.If votong on business matters is done in a business meeting with the entire congregation you will have trouble and issues . . . and it only takes one mis-informed person to cause that.A Board should have a permamnent chairman which is the pastor, and up to 6 rotating members that are nominated by the chairman and ratified at the annual business meetings by the voting members. This should be all the voting members vote for. The Board then represents the voting members by making all business decisions. This enables a good board to pray, study, evaluate, form committees, do research, and make wise business decisions in the best interest of the corporation.
