How long should I work in youth ministry?

84.5% of youth workers are satisfied with their work. Only 57% feel like they will be in youth ministry 5 years from now. Burnout, pay, stress, and promotion make up the reasons for the 43% of youth workers that don’t see themselves in youth ministry 5 years from now.
The biggest misconception in youth ministry is that the job of being a Youth Pastor is a stepping stone ministry. The longer you work on a certain skill the more developed that skill becomes and the more effective you are while using that skill. The same can be said for one’s involvement in youth ministry. You learn the ins and outs of youth ministry, and how you can be more effective with males, females, Jr. High, Sr. High, singers, musicians, and many other gifts that the young people obtain.
The first two years of youth ministry is the hardest, but after that point it generally becomes less complicated. Remember that the most effective youth ministers are ones that have made it a lifetime ministry. Your young people deserve its youth pastor to consider his tenure in youth ministry to be a serious, God called one. If you are a God called youth pastor, you shouldn’t take it lightly and you should stick with it until God takes the burden off of you, or you are called to a different ministry.
