How do I get youth to want to come to church?
. In whatever you do it needs to be consistent. Consistency breeds belief in what you are doing with young people. Also, whether we like to admit it or not, we are competing with Hollywood and the graphics and action that they present. Hokey programs will not be effective for the majority of the young people in your community. We should always remember that we can have up-to-date programs and cool music while serving God. Provide Bible studies and small groups that are lively and attractive to young people. Search online, call the schools in your area or even the police station, and see what are the most active situations involving young people. That is where you will find studies that speak to the young people in your community. You must address the things that they deal with.
There will probably be times when you need to do events that will be out of YOUR comfort level, and that’s okay. If your young people adopt the mentality that serving God is cool and the only way to live, mentoring your young people will be much easier, and your youth ministry will not only grow in numbers but will also grow in nearly every aspect! If you want kids to come to church, live your life, and encourage your young people to live their lives, as if it is cool to serve God!
You should also remember that your students won’t be the only ones showing up at youth service. Discipleship is very important and you should focus on that in your small groups and Bible studies. Obviously outreach should be among the top priorities and you should focus on that in our Bible studies and outreach efforts. At your youth services try to focus on a good mix of the two and in return you will have services that feed the needs of your solid members and your visitors.
