Can you give any guidelines on how to establish a budget for my church?
Why budget? The bible requires that we be good stewards of the resources he has given to us. Accurate evaluation and tracking of money is essential to financial planning security. It is important for a church to check the Federal Laws governing church finances and worker compensations.
Considerations:
• What is the purpose and mission of the church?
• Evaluate the budget for the past 3 years
• Where do your finances come from?
• How stable are the prospects for future income?
• What is your projected income?
• The budget should take into account all expenses including revivals and outreach efforts.
• What are the fixed costs for the year?
• What are the variables you may face?
• What are the long range goals of the church?
• It is also a good idea to build reserves to cover unexpected expenses.
• It is vital to use a good accounting program
• Keep accurate records
• Store records for many years.
• Keep in mind that most lenders will require CPA certified reports before loaning money.
• Restricted funds should not be used for any other purpose other than that for which the money was raised.
Most churches depend on the regular contributions of its members for support. This is in the form of tithe and offerings. This may include personal pledges. Keep in mind that this may vary widely from year to year. Other funds may come from church or departmental fundraisers. Some churches require each department to prepare their mission statement, goals, and budget. They submit a budget with income and expenses, along with accountability procedures.
